Privacy in danger! 14 popular Android apps found leaking data of crores of users, 9 still active (039)

Some popular apps on the Google Play Store have been found to break into the data of millions of users.  Indeed, security researchers have discovered more than a dozen popular Android apps - which have been downloaded more than 140 million (14 million) times from the Google Play Store - that are leaking user data.  A new analysis by CyberNews has found 14 top Android apps that have been downloaded collectively 142.5 million (14.25 crore) times were incorrectly configured on the Google-owned Firebase platform.  Please note that this tool is used to build Android apps, and it can cause serious problems if something is not configured correctly.

In this case, Firebase misconfiguration can cause offending apps to leak sensitive user data such as email, username, real name of an Android Honor, and more.  The researchers said this misconfiguration could enable someone who knows the correct URL to access a real-time database that collects user information without authentication.
30 million users still at risk, Google silent
CyberNews said they contacted Google to alert the tech giant about its findings and help protect its database of exposed apps. But till the time of publishing their research, the Android maker and Play Store operator had not responded. As a result, 9 of the 14 Android apps highlighted by CyberNews are still leaking data - affecting over 30 million (30 million) users.
More than 140 million users have downloaded
In its study online CyberNews said: "Our team's findings show that 14 top Android apps, which have been downloaded collectively by at least 142.5 million (14.25 million) users, have their Firebase real-time database vulnerable. According to cyber news researcher Martinus Verikis, this shows that the app is leaking not only user data, but also their private messages so that they can be accessed by anyone and the like. You can do that if you want."Most affected apps, see list
In terms of what impact Android apps had, the research only mentioned apps that have now fixed the data leak problem.
The most popular affected app was Universal TV Remote Control, which has been automatically installed on over 100 million (100 million) Android devices.
The next most popular app was Find My Kids: Child GPS Watch App and Phone Tracker, which was installed over 10 million (10 million) times from the Google Play Store.
Hybrid Warrior: Dungeon of the Overlord and Remote for Roku: Codematics - the other apps reported by CyberNews - both have over one million (1 crore) installs.
